Quick read

How this works

Eight questions read your element — Fire, Earth, Air, or Water — and eight read your modality — Cardinal, Fixed, or Mutable. Your strongest of each meet to form one of twelve archetypes, each mirrored by a zodiac sign. Answers never leave your device.
The four elements gathered at dusk — a soft flame, worn stone, drifting air and a still pool held in balance against a deep violet, watery dark.
Four elements across, three modalities down — the two oldest axes in astrology, read as the feeling of your energy rather than your sign.

Element & Modality Assessment

What’s your elemental temperament?

Sixteen quick questions read the two oldest axes in astrology — your element (Fire, Earth, Air, Water) and your modality (Cardinal, Fixed, Mutable) — and match you to one of twelve temperament archetypes. We never ask your birthday; this is your energy, not your sign.

The two axes underneath every sign

Long before horoscopes, astrologers organised the zodiac with two simple ideas. The first is the element — the four classical qualities of Fire, Earth, Air and Water, each describing a different kind of energy. The second is the modality (or quadruplicity) — Cardinal, Fixed and Mutable — describing how that energy behaves in time: whether it starts things, holds them, or changes them. Every one of the twelve signs is exactly one element and one modality, which is why there are four times three of them. Read together, these two axes are a compact, surprisingly accurate map of temperament.

The four elements

  • Fire

Fire is the energy of spirit and will — warmth, drive, instinct, the spark that wants to act before it overthinks.

  • Earth

Earth is the energy of matter and form — patience, the senses, and the slow craft of making something real and lasting.

  • Air

Air is the energy of mind and relation — ideas, language, perspective, and the constant motion between people and possibilities.

  • Water

Water is the energy of feeling and depth — intuition, empathy, memory, and the tides that move beneath the surface.

The three modalities

  • Cardinal

Cardinal energy initiates. It begins seasons and projects, leads, and sets things in motion before others have decided to move.

  • Fixed

Fixed energy sustains. It holds the centre, deepens what already exists, and resists being pushed off a chosen course.

  • Mutable

Mutable energy adapts. It bends, translates, and reshapes itself to whatever the moment needs, trading constancy for flexibility.

The twelve temperament archetypes

Four elements across, three modalities down — each cell is an archetype, mirrored by the sign that shares its signature.

The Trailblazer

Cardinal Fire · Aries

You move first and figure it out on the way — energy that begins things before fear can.

The Architect

Cardinal Earth · Capricorn

The Harmonizer

Cardinal Air · Libra

You read the room and rebalance it — air that initiates through connection and fairness.

The Luminary

Fixed Fire · Leo

You hold warmth at the centre of the room — steady fire that others gather around.

The Cultivator

Fixed Earth · Taurus

You grow things slowly and keep them — earth that values what lasts over what dazzles.

The Visionary

Fixed Air · Aquarius

You hold an idea the world has not caught up to — air that stays loyal to a principle.

The Alchemist

Fixed Water · Scorpio

You go to the depths others avoid and come back changed — water that transforms.

The Voyager

Mutable Fire · Sagittarius

You chase the next horizon — restless fire that turns life into a search for meaning.

The Refiner

Mutable Earth · Virgo

You see what could be better and quietly fix it — earth that perfects through care.

The Messenger

Mutable Air · Gemini

You move between worlds and translate them — air that turns curiosity into connection.

The Dreamer

Mutable Water · Pisces

You feel the whole ocean at once — water that dissolves boundaries between self and world.

This is your energy, not your sign — how you move through the world, read straight from your answers.

Frequently asked

What are elements and modalities in astrology?

They are the two structural axes underneath the twelve zodiac signs. The four elements — Fire, Earth, Air, Water — describe the quality of your energy (drive, groundedness, intellect, feeling). The three modalities — Cardinal, Fixed, Mutable — describe how that energy moves: it initiates, it sustains, or it adapts. Every sign is one element plus one modality, so four times three gives twelve unique combinations.

Do I need to know my birth chart?

No. Unlike a birth-chart reading, this quiz scores your temperament directly from your answers — it never asks your date of birth. Two people born on the same day can move through the world with very different energy, and that lived temperament is what this measures.

How is this different from my zodiac sign?

Each of the twelve archetypes happens to share an element and modality with one sign, so we offer that sign as a "cosmic mirror." But the result is about your energy and how you operate, not the sign’s mythology, ruler, or compatibility — for that, follow the link to the full sign page.

How long does the quiz take?

About four minutes. There are sixteen forced-choice questions — eight that read your element and eight that read your modality.

Can my element or modality be a tie?

Often your top two are close, and that nuance is real — the runner-up colours your temperament. The result shows your full element and modality breakdown so you can see the blend, not just the winner.

Is my data saved anywhere?

No. Answers stay on your device. Your element and modality scores are encoded into the result URL only so the page can show your breakdown; nothing is sent to a server.
