Which zodiac signs are most compatible?

Traditional astrology often describes same-element pairings as naturally compatible — Fire with Fire (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius), Earth with Earth (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn), Air with Air (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius), Water with Water (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces). Complementary-element pairings — Fire and Air, Earth and Water — are also often described as harmonious. However, compatibility between people is better described by the full birth chart than by sun signs alone.

What is synastry in astrology?

Synastry is the branch of astrology that studies relationships by comparing two people's birth charts. Instead of looking at one chart in isolation, a synastry reading overlays both charts and examines the aspects (angular relationships) between each person's planets. A Venus-Mars conjunction between charts, for example, is associated with attraction; a Saturn square might indicate points of tension and growth.

Can incompatible signs have a good relationship?

Yes. Sun sign compatibility is a broad sketch, not a verdict. Real relationships involve two full people — with moon signs, rising signs, personal histories, values, and communication styles — none of which a sun sign captures. Many deeply compatible couples have 'incompatible' sun signs. Astrology is most useful here as a lens for noticing tendencies, not predicting outcomes.

What makes two zodiac signs compatible?

In traditional astrology, compatibility looks at element (Fire, Earth, Air, Water) and modality (Cardinal, Fixed, Mutable), as well as the angular relationship between signs: trine (120°, same element, easy flow), sextile (60°, complementary elements, friendly), square (90°, tension and activation), and opposition (180°, attraction through difference, potential friction). Modern astrologers also look at the full chart: how Venus signs, Mars signs, and Moon signs interact matters enormously.

Is zodiac compatibility based on science?

There is no peer-reviewed evidence that sun sign pairs predict relationship outcomes more accurately than chance. Compatibility research in psychology looks instead at personality similarity on the Big Five traits, attachment style fit, communication patterns, and shared values.
